ALICE E MARTHA

Alice and Martha unisce due progetti dell’artista britannica Siân Davey. Looking for Alice è la storia di sua figlia Alice, nata con la sindrome di Down e dell'ansia e delle fatiche di una madre che è cosciente che la sta portando in un mondo in cui sarebbe sempre stata considerata “imperfetta”. Racconta una storia di accettazione e amore, e la consapevolezza che non sono le nostre differenze ma ciò che condividiamo ad essere importanti.

La serie Martha nasce quando la figlia maggiore le fa notare che non le sta facendo più foto perché come madre e fotografa si concentra principalmente su Alice. È allora che Davey rivolge la sua macchina fotografica verso l’altra figlia, nel momento in cui è sul punto di diventare una donna. Un tempo molto delicato e breve in cui è ancora libera dalle norme e dalle aspettative della società.

Siân Davey (1964, Brighton, Regno Unito) è una fotografa con una formazione in Belle Arti e Politica Sociale. Ha lavorato per 15 anni come psicoterapeuta buddista umanista prima di iniziare la sua pratica creativa. Nel 2011, all’età di 48 anni, ha trovato il suo mezzo espressivo. Il suo lavoro fotografico è un’indagine sui paesaggi psicologici suoi e di coloro che la circondano. I quattro figli di Davey e la sua comunità sono al centro della sua ricerca pratica. Si ispira alla sua infanzia come narrativa per informare la sua pratica.

“Alice and Martha” unites two projects by British artist Siân Davey. “Looking for Alice” is the story of her daughter Alice, born with Down’s Syndrome and the anxiety and struggles of a mother bringing her into a world where she would be always considered “imperfect”. It tells a story of acceptance and love, and the realization that it is not our differences but what we share that is important. 

The series “Martha” is born when her older daughter complains that she does not take pictures of her anymore, because as a mother and a photographer she is mainly focused on Alice. It is then that Davey turns her camera to her other child which was at the cusp of becoming a woman. A very delicate and brief moment in time when she is still free of societal norms and expectations.

Siân Davey  (1964, Brighton, UK) is a photographer with a background in Fine Art and Social Policy. She worked for 15 years as a humanist Buddhist psychotherapist before beginning her creative practice. In 2011, at the age of 48, she found her medium. Her photography work is an investigation of the psychological landscapes of both herself and those around her. Davey’s four children and her community are central to her practice. She draws upon her childhood years as a constant narrative to inform her practice.
