Nel paese di Colmenar Viejo, vicino a Madrid, ogni anno quattro o cinque ragazze vengono scelte come Maya tra le volontarie, alternandosi. Ogni bambina, tra i 7 e gli 11 anni, deve stare ferma, seria e in silenzio per un paio di ore su un altare disposto per strada e decorato con fiori locali e piante. La festività della Maya deriva da riti pagani e tradizionalmente si ritiene che questa figura dia il benvenuto al ritorno della natura dopo il letargo invernale, ma si dice anche che sia simbolicamente legata al passaggio da bambina a donna. Realizzando una serie di ritratti alle bambine Maya, Daniel Ochoa de Olza documenta questa tradizione che affonda le sue radici nel Medioevo.

Daniel Ochoa de Olza è un fotogiornalista pluripremiato, residente a Città del Messico e Madrid. Nel 2001 il suo interesse è passato dalla pittura alla fotografia quando iniziò a studiare Fotografia Artistica all’Istituto d’Arte di Pamplona e poi all’Università di Barcellona. Dal 2004 è fotografo di Associated Press con base a Madrid. 

Every year, in the town of Colmenar Viejo near Madrid,  four or five girls are chosen as a Maya among the volunteers. Each one, aged between 7 and 11 years old, should sit still, serious, and quiet for a couple of hours on an altar placed on the street and decorated with local flowers and plants. The festivity of the Maya comes from pagan rites and traditionally it is believed that the Maya symbolically welcomes the resurgence of Nature after the lethargy of winter, although it is also said that it has a symbolism related to the passage of the girl to woman. With this series of portraits to the Maya girls, Daniel de Ochoa documents this tradition whose origins trace back to the Middle Ages.

Daniel Ochoa de Olza (Pamplona, 1978) is an award-winning independent photojournalist based in Mexico City, and Madrid. His interest turned from painting to photography in 2001 when he started studying Artistic Photography at the Pamplona’s Art School and later on in Barcelona’s University. From 2004 Daniel was based in Madrid as a staff news photographer with The Associated Press.
