Passengers
Nel 2016, il primo agosto, 118 persone furono salvate da un gommone alla deriva a 20 miglia nautiche al largo delle coste libiche. Dezfuli fotografa tutti i passeggeri della barca pochi minuti dopo il loro salvataggio, per umanizzare questa tragedia e dare nomi e volti a questa realtà. Poco dopo i migranti sbarcano in Italia, nel porto siciliano di Pozzalo. Questi ritratti sono state mostrate al PhEST 2017.
Successivamente, Dezfuli intraprende una lunga ricerca dei 118 passeggeri per scoprire perché hanno lasciato i loro paesi, cosa hanno vissuto lungo la rotta migratoria e come hanno continuato a vivere dopo essere stati salvati in mare. In “Passengers”, Dezfuli documenta le storie di queste persone per creare empatia e comprensione e per creare un corpus documentario che serva da riferimento e aiuti a evitare che la difficile situazione dei migranti venga dimenticata.

César Dezfuli (1991) è un giornalista e fotografo documentarista ispano-iraniano specializzato in migrazione e diritti umani su scala internazionale. Nel 2016 ha iniziato a lavorare al suo progetto più famoso “Passengers” per mettere in discussione la rappresentazione visiva della migrazione, e nel 2023 il lavoro ha vinto un World Press Photo Award.
In 2016, the first of August, 118 people were rescued from a rubber dinghy drifting 20 nautical miles off the coast of Libya. Dezfuli photographs all the passengers on the boat minutes after their rescue, to humanize this tragedy and attach names and faces to this reality. Shortly afterward, the migrants disembark in Italy, in the Sicilian port of Pozzalo. These portraits were shown at PhEST 2017.
Afterwards, Dezfuli undertakes a long-term search for the 118 passengers to find out why they left their countries, what they experienced on the migration route, and how they continued their lives after being rescued at sea. In “Passengers”, Dezfuli documents these people’s stories to build empathy and understanding, and to create a documentary corpus to serve as a reference and help prevent the plight of migrants from being forgotten.

César Dezfuli (1991) is a Spanish-Iranian journalist and documentary photographer focusing on migration, human rights on an international scale. In 2016 he began working on his most renowned project “Passengers” to question the visual representation of migration, and in 2023 the work won a World Press Photo Award.
