Ambientata nel West americano, “Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit” (una parte di sorte, una parte di spirito) accosta fotografie documentarie e performative. Le immagini dialogano intimamente con un archivio storico, facendo riemergere e contestualizzando l’influenza culturale e politica dei nuovi movimenti religiosi popolari e delle comunità utopiche nel corso della storia americana fino ai giorni nostri.

Fin dalle origini, l’America è stata in parte fondata come luogo di rifugio religioso e gli eventi storici relativi alla nascita di nuove credenze religiose sono estremamente complicati. La storia dimostra che l’esperienza americana può permeare molte realtà diverse: dai primi coloni puritani che formarono gli Universal Friends (Amici universali), all’esodo dei mormoni nello Utah, fino al fascino esercitato a livello nazionale dalla New Age nell’ultima metà del XX secolo. A prima vista, l’idea di libertà religiosa in America incarna le infinite possibilità del sogno americano. Eppure, una volta svelata la complessità dei suoi aspetti, emerge una storia più profonda e stratificata: la storia dell’utopia americana, grandiosa nella sua visione, ma storicamente radicata nell’espressione dell’imperialismo americano.

Le fotografie di questa serie sono state scattate nelle mie terre d’origine e dove sono cresciuto, tra il Nevada e la California. Grazie al tempo trascorso in loco, sono riuscito a comprendere l’effetto psicologico che il paesaggio dell’Ovest ha sulla creazione del mito americano. Gran parte di questo lavoro si concentra sulle incertezze ambientali di questa regione, un luogo che molte comunità utopiche chiamano casa. Globi luminosi che disegnano archi nel cielo notturno, crateri giganti nella terra e inarrestabili incendi boschivi – per molti, questi fenomeni possono assumere un carattere biblico e creare un terreno fertile per miti e cospirazioni.

Questo progetto si rifà alla tradizione documentaristica ma, come i nuovi movimenti qui analizzati, si affida all’estetica del misterioso e del profondo. Attraverso questo approccio, il mio lavoro mira a fornire una prospettiva alternativa e ricca di sfumature dell’esperienza americana, che offra un percorso volto alla comprensione empatica delle credenze comunitarie e all'esame critico del pensiero magico.

Antone Dolezal è un artista visivo che utilizza la fotografia, il formato video, il suono, i materiali d’archivio e la realizzazione di libri per indagare le dinamiche culturali e politiche della storia, del folklore e della mitologia americana. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto in tutti gli Stati Uniti e in Europa e le sue stampe e i suoi libri d’artista sono conservati all’interno di importanti collezioni pubbliche come quelle del Museum of Contemporary Photography, del Museum of Modern Art Library, del New Mexico Museum of Art, del Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art e del Whitney Museum of American Art - Special Collections. Antone è autore di diversi libri, tra cui “Spook Light Chronicles” (Search Party, 2015) e Devil’s Promenade (Overlapse, 2021), di cui è co-autore insieme alla collaboratrice di lunga data Lara Shipley. La sua produzione artistica fa parte di numerose antologie ed è stata pubblicata su Art Journal, British Journal of Photography, National Public Radio, The New Yorker e Smithsonian Magazine.

Set in the American West, “Part of Fortune and Part of Spirit” combines documentary and performative photographs that sit in close dialogue with a historical archive, resurrecting and recontextualizing the cultural and political influence of popular new religious movements and utopian communities throughout American history to the present day.

From its inception, America was partially founded as a place for religious refuge and holds a deeply complicated history regarding the birth of new religious beliefs. History shows that the American experience can permeate many different realities — from the early Puritan settlers who formed the Universal Friends, to the Mormon exodus into Utah and the nationwide fascination with the New Age during the last half of the 20th century. At first glance, America’s idea of religious freedom embodies the endless possibilities of the American Dream. Yet, once the complexity of its layers is revealed, a deeper story emerges. A story of American utopia that is grand in vision yet historically rooted in the expression of American imperialism.

The photographs in this series are taken in my home region of Nevada and California. Through extensive time in the field, I have come to understand the psychological effect the Western landscape holds for American mythmaking. Much of this work focuses on the environmental uncertainties within this region — a place that many utopian communities call home. Luminous globes falling in arcs from the night sky, giant craters in the earth and unrelenting wildfires — can seem biblical for many and create fertile ground for conspiracy and myth to take root.

This work draws on the documentary tradition, yet like the new movements being examined, relies on the aesthetics of the mysterious and profound. Through this approach, my work aims to provide an alternative and nuanced perspective of the American experience that offers a path toward an empathetic understanding of communal belief and a critical examination of magical thinking.

Antone Dolezal is a visual artist whose body of work employs photography, video, sound, archival materials, and bookmaking to survey the cultural and political dynamics of American history, folklore, and mythology. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe and his prints and artist books are held in notable public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Museum of Modern Art Library, New Mexico Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,  and the Whitney Museum of American Art - Special Collections. Antone is the author of several books including “Spook Light Chronicles” (Search Party, 2015) and “Devil’s Promenade” (Overlapse, 2021), co-authored with long-time collaborator Lara Shipley. His work has appeared in many anthologies and has been profiled in Art Journal, British Journal of Photography, National Public Radio, The New Yorker, and Smithsonian Magazine.
