I pellegrini che camminano verso l’immagine della Vergine di Guadalupe, appesa nella basilica di Guadalupe a Città del Messico, portano sulla schiena delle icone della Vergine:  riproduzioni minuziosamente realizzate a mano oppure produzioni industriali, il loro valore non sta nella materialità, ma nel valore che gli dà il pellegrino. Alinka Echeverría ha fotografato queste icone inquadrando i pellegrini di spalle in maniera seriale, stimolando così una riflessione sul rapporto tra immagine e fede, particolarmente forte nella cultura messicana.

Alinka Echeverría (1981, Città del Messico) è un’artista anglo-messicana e antropologa visiva. Ha un master in Antropologia Sociale dall’Università di Edinburgo (2004) e un master in Fotografia dall’ICP in New York (2008). Il suo lavoro è stato esposto ampiamente in sedi internazionali e ha vinto numerosi premi, tra cui una recente borsa di studio della Fondazione MAST di Bologna.

The pilgrims walking towards the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, that hangs inside La Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City, carrying their personal representation of the Virgin, carry on their backs their personal interpretation of the Virgin: delicately handmade to mass industrially produced, their value is not in their materiality, but in the value that the pilgrim imbues in them. Alinka Echeverría photographed the backs of the pilgrims carrying their personal representation of the Virgin, offering a reflection on the relationship between image and religion, particularly strong in Mexican culture.

Alinka Echeverría (1981, Mexico City) is a Mexican-British artist and visual anthropologist.  She holds a Masters degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh (2004) and a post-graduate degree in Photography from the International Center for Photography in New York (2008). Her work has been widely exhibited at international venues and she is currently a grantee of the MAST Foundation in Bologna, Italy.
